Whenever a Child is Born by Nancy Diedrich
Category: Children's Fiction (Ages 3-7), 30 pages
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Publisher: WestBow Press
Release date: July 2017
In his 2014 homily for the Feast of Holy Guardian Angels, October 2, Pope Francis told those gathered for daily mass to be like children who pay attention to their "traveling companion. No one journeys alone, and no one should think that they are alone.
"According to Church tradition," the pope said, "we all have an angel with us, who guards us . . . It is what God said: 'I send an angel before you, to guard you, to accompany you on the way, so you will not be alone.'"
In this children's book, angels wait anxiously and with great excitement to see which one of them will be chosen to be the guardian angel of a child that is to be born. This delightful book depicts the joy of all God's creations anticipating the birth of another precious child. The sun shines brighter, the moon has a shinier glow, flowers grow taller, birds tweet more sweetly, and angels dance and sing with bliss, as all creation awaits another baby girl or boy.
Whenever a Child is Born offers the perfect message for parents as it charmingly tells the story of how all of heaven and earth react to the news that a child is about to be born. The story comforts parents with the knowledge that their baby is a special gift from heaven to them, and that they will never be alone raising their child, and that their child will never ever be alone in life.
Parents never worry. No one journeys alone through life because whenever a child is born, he is given a guardian angel.

Meet the Author:
Nancy Diedrich was born and raised in South Louisiana, where storytelling was not just an art form, but an authentic way of communicating. Everyone had a tale to tell! This was, more than likely, where her love of communication developed. With undergraduate degrees in English and speech, and graduate degrees in psychological counseling, Nancy learned that words can educate; they can entertain; they can inspire and they can heal. In Nancy’s career, she has been a teacher, a counselor and an author, where the power of words always guided her in interaction with her students, clients and readers. Nancy’s value for genuine communication extends beyond her career, to the anchors of her life, which are her faith, her family and her friendships.
Whenever A Child is Born is Nancy’s first published children’s book. In it, the reader gets a glimpse of this author’s compassion for family, and her gift of faith, as the story tells how all of heaven and earth react to the news that a child is about to be born.
What is the significance of the title of your book?
In my Marriage and Family Therapy practice I often work in group Therapy. It was in a group that consisted of young mothers, that I realized the topic of “having a new baby” would be a great subject of my book. The ladies discussed how they would tell their families that another baby was on the way. They especially addressed the issue of informing their children that they were going to have another sibling. These ladies found it difficult to find an appropriate message for their children.
This is when I realized that the joy of a child coming into the world needed its own storyline. The title, Whenever A Child is Born, tells the story of how all of creation might respond to hearing that a new baby is about to be born. I believe the title is significant because it identifies a time of joyfulness and excitement whenever anyone hears the delightful news that a new baby is on the way.
What is the key theme and message of your book?
The central theme and message of my book is that all creations rejoice whenever they hear that a new baby is about to be born. The sun shines brighter; flowers grow taller; birds sing louder, and all animals celebrate the news.
Angels dance and sing as they wait in joyful anticipation to see which one of them will be chosen to be the guardian angel of the new baby. The theme of guardian angels protecting the new baby, as well as, the new parents is developed delightfully throughout the book.
All creatures respond with joy, because babies are gifts of love, and bring more love to the world.
How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?
I have written ten books, but only three are published. Before I ever considered writing anything for publication, I wrote a children’s book for each of my seven grandchildren, with each of them being the main character of his/her very own book. The children loved the books, and began to share them with their friends. They brought them to school for “Show and Tell”, and I was even invited to read in one of the children’s classes.
The books for my grandchildren were written out of pure love for those kiddos, but they were also a great inspiration for me to write a book to have published. After much thought and careful consideration, I decided to give it a try.
Whenever A Child is Born is my first published book, and I will admit that it is also my favorite. It is unique to me because it is my first book, and because I learned so much from the entire experience that this book brought to me.
When I look back at the challenges of researching, writing, editing, illustrating, and the decisions regarding format, color, fonts, text size and placement, I can smile with gratitude for all this book taught me. Yes, I can say it is most special to me, and will probably always be my favorite because this little book and I went through a lot together.
Can you share something about this book that is not in the blurb?
When I started writing this book, the last thing on my mind was “sales and marketing”. I had much bigger fish to fry than that! I had to get my vision and my message written; I had to decide on a title; I had to find a publisher; I had to find an illustrator. It seemed as if my list of “things to do” was endless. But, little by little, step by step, the “to do list” was completed, and soon afterwards, a big brown UPS truck delivered a box of amazement to my front door. My very first shipment of my very first book arrived!
This is when the fun started. There were Book Signings, School Readings, Author Visits, and Baby Showers… Yes, I said Baby Showers. I don’t usually include this in the blurb, but this book took on a life of its own. It became a Baby Shower sensation! Before I knew it, it had become the most popular gift for new Moms, and new Grandmothers. I was asked to read it at Baby Showers; it was given as a party favor at these events, and one shower even had a cake made to look just like the book. The whole phenomenon was amusing to me.
This book did a great job of marketing itself!
What genre do you write, and why did you choose it?
I write Children’s Fiction because I love the imagination of a child. It is gratifying for me to write for children, where storylines can entertain, as well as, inform curious young readers. I believe this genre offers children an opportunity to fall in love with reading for the first time. Children’s books expose children to morals, values and social skills, in addition to strengthening their reading and cognitive skills.
Whenever I am asked to read to children at a school, a library, or an Author Visit, I bring lots of posters and displays, but my best banner always takes center stage. It has one of my favorite quotes for children on it. In very large letters, it says: “TODAY A READER; TOMORROW A LEADER”. I believe that, and that is why I write for children.
Where can readers find out more about you and your books?
I am on social media, and readers can follow and interact with me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I also have a website, where readers can order books, follow my posts, see pictures of book events, and leave messages for me. I value connecting with readers, and I believe it is important for every author.
Whenever a Child is Born is a heartwarming tale about family, guardian angels, and love.
Have you ever wanted a chance to indirectly tell your children that they'll never be alone through beautifully-drawn pictures and words?
This book is the one, lemme tell you! The art style is adorable, with simple sentences attached. In my opinion, I don't think the design is overly complicated. It gives good bedtime-story vibes.
One issue, which is pretty personal to me, would be that it mostly talked about guardian angels. I didn't understand why it was less about the babies. I'm guessing that was my expectation coming into this book.
Then again, this isn't a big problem.
That's why I still gave Whenever a Child is Born five stars. I'm not a picky person for picture books. As long as the child can understand most of the words by themselves, I'm okay with it! This book did an exceptional job of comforting the reader. Therefore, I enjoyed it very much!
All in all, I highly recommend this one.
